Wild stuff. ---------------------------------------- SAM: Hey, welcome back to 7 Minute Books. I'm Sam, and today we're getting into A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived by Adam Rutherford. So Sophie, I have to ask, what did you make of this one? SOPHIE: Hey there Sam, I'm so glad we're doing this one. Rutherford is a geneticist, and this book is basically him taking a sledgehammer to almost everything we think we know about race, ancestry, and our own DNA. It's science, but it reads like a really good story. SAM: Right, and the first thing he goes after is the whole concept of race. He says it's a biological fiction. SOPHIE: Yeah, and that's not a political statement, it's just what the data shows. There is more genetic diversity within a single African tribe than there is between a person from Norway and a person from New Guinea. Our visible differences are basically just adaptations to sunlight and climate. It's a thin veneer of paint on a fundamentally identical machine. SAM: That completely blew my mind. So the whole idea of a pure race is a myth. SOPHIE: A dangerous fantasy. And the flip side of that is we're all mongrels. If you're from the British Isles, your DNA is a patchwork of Celtic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, and Norman ancestry. Plus all the traders and refugees who passed through. We're not branches on a tree, we're a river delta that keeps merging. SAM: Okay, so then he gets into all those ancestry tests people buy, where you spit in a tube and they tell you you're fifteen percent Native American or whatever. He's pretty skeptical of those, right? SOPHIE: Really skeptical. Those numbers are statistical estimations based on comparisons with modern populations. They're not a direct readout of your ancient past. The further back you go, the more complicated it gets, because you're related to everyone. SAM: And that's where Mitochondrial Eve comes in, which is such a misunderstood idea. SOPHIE: Exactly. She's the common ancestor of every person alive today, a woman who lived in Africa maybe 150,000 to 200,000 years ago. But she wasn't the only woman alive then, and she wasn't the first woman. She's just the one whose mitochondrial DNA line survived to the present. It's a statistical inevitability. SAM: Same with Y-chromosomal Adam for men. And the math behind it is wild. If you go back far enough, your number of ancestors doubles every generation, and eventually that number exceeds the total number of people who have ever lived. So your family tree isn't a tree, it's a tangled web where the same people show up over and over. SOPHIE: Which means you're related to everyone, and everyone is related to you. That's the core of the whole book. SAM: Yeah, but then he complicates the story of how we left Africa. The old story was that a small group walked out sixty thousand years ago and replaced the Neanderthals without any interbreeding. Clean conquest. SOPHIE: And the DNA says that's nonsense. We didn't replace them, we had sex with them. Most people of non-African descent carry between one and four percent Neanderthal DNA. It's a permanent legacy. Those genes affect our immune systems, our risk for depression, even how easily we sunburn. SAM: And the Denisovans. We only know they existed from a single finger bone found in a Siberian cave. And people in Melanesia carry significant Denisovan DNA. SOPHIE: Right, so the story of human migration isn't a march of triumph. It's mixing, mingling, and adaptation. We're walking chimeras. SAM: Which leads to one of my favorite parts, the non-human parts of our genome. Eight percent of our DNA is the fossilized remains of ancient viruses. SOPHIE: Endogenous retroviruses. They infected our ancestors millions of years ago and inserted their code into our eggs or sperm. And most of them are just dead junk, but some got co-opted. The most famous one makes a protein that's essential for the placenta. Without a viral stowaway, live birth as we know it wouldn't exist. SAM: So we're not just individuals. We're a community of human and viral DNA. That's such a weird and beautiful idea. SOPHIE: And it keeps going. Lactose tolerance is a recent mutation that appeared only a few thousand years ago in dairy-farming populations. It spread like wildfire because it was so advantageous. That's gene-culture co-evolution. SAM: Yeah, and blue eyes. All blue-eyed people share a single ancestor who lived maybe six to ten thousand years ago. It's a single letter change in one gene. SOPHIE: A single letter. And it's one of the most celebrated physical traits in the world. It's humbling. SAM: So then he takes on the idea that genes are destiny. He says most diseases aren't caused by one broken gene. Heart disease, diabetes, most cancers are hundreds or thousands of genes each making a tiny contribution, plus environment. SOPHIE: The discovery of a gene for something is almost always a media oversimplification. Even Huntington's, which is a single dominant mutation, varies wildly in age of onset and severity. The genome isn't a blueprint, it's a recipe. The final dish depends on the ingredients, the cooking method, and the chef. SAM: And he applies that to intelligence and behavior too. There's no single smart gene. Studies find thousands of genes with tiny effects. Heritability changes depending on the environment. SOPHIE: In a society with equal access to education and nutrition, genetic differences will play a larger role. In a society with massive inequality, environment dominates. Same for aggression, risk-taking, even political orientation. Our genes provide a range of possibilities, but environment and choices determine which ones get realized. SAM: So we're not slaves to our DNA. I actually pushed back on this when I first read it, because I thought, well, genes must matter more than that. But he convinced me. SOPHIE: He's good at that. And then he ends with this really humbling point about evolution. There's no direction, no goal, no progress. A bacterium is just as evolved as a human. We're not the pinnacle. SAM: We're a species of ape that learned to talk, cook, and write. Chimpanzee DNA is about ninety-eight point eight percent identical to ours. That one point two percent difference is everything. Language, art, technology, love, and cruelty. SOPHIE: And the book touches on the future. CRISPR and gene editing. The promise of curing devastating diseases, but also the ethical minefield. He doesn't offer easy answers, but he says we have to proceed with caution and humility. The history of eugenics is a stark warning. SAM: Right. So the one thing I'm taking away from this is that we're all part of a single extended family. The divisions we create between nations, races, and religions are trivial compared to the biological unity of our species. That's the real story.
